Foundation funds trauma unit

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Disaster victims in the southeastern part of the state will have a new trauma unit, thanks in part to a grant from the Community Foundation of Southeastern North Carolina.

The Riegelwood Fire and Rescue Company received the $42,000 grant to fund a Mass Casualty Trauma Unit to serve victims of disasters.

The grant comes specifically from the foundation's Riegelwood Disaster Relief and Recovery Fund, which was created in response to deadly tornadoes that struck the area in 2006.

The trauma unit includes supplies and equipment to serve 25 adult patients, five children and 100 "walking wounded," and comes with an all-terrain vehicle for hard-to-reach locations.

The grant requires that the unit be used to help neighboring counties if needed during future disasters.
