CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation awarded a total of more than $530,000 in grants to 26 organizations across the state.
The grants are designed to help the foundation meet its goal of improving the health of vulnerable populations and promoting healthy and active communities.
The three largest grants include:
- $80,000 to the Mountain Area Health Education Center in Asheville for examination, screening, diagnosis, treatment and counseling for needy women at risk for gynecologic cancers.
- $75,000 to the North Carolina Institute of Minority Economic Development for the expansion of African-American prostate-cancer programs in Hertford, Perquimans and Pasquotank counties.
- $69,760 to the Graham County Health Department for a physical-activity intervention program that includes paving a one-mile trail around Graham County high school and middle school.
The foundation also awarded 17 equipment grants as part of its Healthy Active Communities focus area.
